The Swedish School in Portland

Portland, Oregon

The goal of The Swedish School in Portland is to develop the students’ ability to comprehend, speak, read and write Swedish. In addition, the students learn about their cultural heritage through songs, traditions, geography, history and literature.

All classes are taught in Swedish, with English used only as needed to clarify concepts or directives (approximately 80% of class instruction is in Swedish). This can provide additional Swedish language exposure to children who have Swedish spoken at home.

Classes are held at Augustana Lutheran Church, 2710 NE 14th Ave in Portland. They usually meet two Saturdays per month from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The new school year starts each year in September.

Parents are welcome to sit together and enjoy ‘Fika’ with coffee and treats in an area separate from the classrooms during learning time. Additionally each family is requested to volunteer for fundraisers and to join on field days and field trips throughout the year.

The Swedish School in Portland is a registered non-profit organization that does not discriminate against applicants, students, or faculty on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin.
